A group of people gather for a family reunion in a house on an isolated island. They are waiting for the last person to join them, but as the evening arrives and he doesn’t arrive, a strange anxiety overwhelms them. The group dismantles and the family members wander away from the house separately, confronting the sea and an unspoken fear that slowly consumes them.
Shot in 16mm, Berenice is Rohmer’s first finished film. The film is based on a story by Edgar Allen Poe about a man who becomes obsessed with his fiancé’s teeth. The film was shot at Andre Bazin’s house by Jacques Rivette. Rivette also edited the film.

Eduardo, a typical bourgeois man from Mexico City, goes on a business trip to a province, accompanied by his lover. While there, he picks up a large sum of money and, after a spat with his lover, sets off on his drive back to the city alone. The trip proves extremely tense for Eduardo, who's increasingly gripped by paranoid fears that the men intend to rob and murder him.

11-year-old Nick moves into a large old house with his sisters Jennie and Clare, left in the care of Helga the Swedish au pair while their parents are away in America. Nick is unhappy at his new school, where he is befriended by a boy named Sam and intimidated by scripture teacher Mr. Crabb, who is interested in the occult and demonology. Nick hears voices in the house and receives messages on his computer screen; he also suffers inexplicable blisters on his feet and grazes on his elbows and knees. When he dreams of burning and wakes up in a bed full of ashes, Nick tells a psychiatrist that he feels he is possessed by a demon.

Monsieur Fantômas is very rich in terms of surrealist images― e.g. three mysterious masked men cycling across the beach in slow motion, Inspector Juve’s assistants breaking down a door in the middle of the sand with the help of a gigantic key used as a battering ram, the two lovers' romantic and rather gripping walk along the seaside (he is masked, while she is wearing a nun’s wimple and a swimming suit) hand in hand... But one image stands out from all the rest: the sequence in which Fantômas is surrounded by police.
